Award-winning actor John Arcilla expressed a strong stance against the tendency of some netizens to turn crimes and other serious social issues into memes and sources of humor.
John has been very vocal about his political views, as he is open to expressing his opinion when it comes to matters that concern him. Through his social media page, the actor would share thought-provoking posts about social and political issues,
In a recent statement, based on the article by Newsko, the actor said that he understands that humor and satire are sometimes used to convey messages to the public, but he believes some issues should not be trivialized or made the subject of jokes.
“Minsan masyado na nating ginagawang meme at comedy ang mga krimen. Dahil dito, nawawala ang bigat ng mga nagagawang pagkakamali at tila nagiging normal na lamang ang mga ito sa paningin ng iba,” John Arcilla said.
He stated that it is important to find more effective ways to reach and raise the public’s awareness, as people have varying levels of understanding regarding satire and social commentary.
John also shared that he deliberately turns down projects that do not align with his principles. He cited one instance that involved an offer to portray a politician, a role he felt could be exploited for campaign purposes.
The actor added that he does not speak out on social and political issues for personal gain, but rather to express his concern for the welfare of Filipinos, especially the needy.
John Arcilla also emphasized the importance of ensuring that funds derived from public taxes are directed toward proper and meaningful causes.
