Comelec Set to Test New Mobile App for Voting in PH
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said that the commission is set to test a mobile app that may be used for voting in the country’s elections.
One of the biggest innovations in Philippine elections has been the automatic voting of Filipinos. From manually typing the name to the ballot, the vote now counts by vote-counting machines (VCMs).
But in the next elections, there may be a more modern way of voting as Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon has stated that they will have a test run for several mobile app voting programs.
According to the report of GMA News, Guanzon said in a statement that if they were to successfully test some mobile application development on the new voting method, they would refer Congress to pass legislation for mobile app voting.
The Commissioner also said that besides on Comelec, it would also include various election watchdogs in the country such as Lente, the National Movement for Free Elections, and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting to ensure fairness of the testing.
According to Guanzon, their development of the mobile app for voting will help overseas absentee voting. In the 2019 senatorial elections, due to low turnouts from OFWs, it received only 334,242 votes. If there is a voting app, up to 2 million people can vote in the May 2022 elections.
The launch of the mobile voting app will also help to speed up polling especially given the high turnout in the 2019 elections due to VCM supporters. Approximately 960 machines had pr0blems in the midterm elections.
