Antarctica: Weather Station Records Continent’s Hottest Temperature Ever

Weather Station Records Antarctica Hottest Temperature Ever

ANTARCTICA – The research base in the Antarctica continent has recorded the hottest temperature ever amid the rising concern about global warming.

Global warming is the rapid increase in the average temperature of the world according to NRDC. The kind of phenomenon is still ongoing over the decades. This occurs when carbon dioxide, greenhouse gasses, and air pollutants merge in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that bounced back to the earth.

That is the reason why the world became hotter, we experience heavier rainfall, more frequent droughts, and powerful hurricanes. It is also known as the greenhouse effect.

Based on a report from GMA News, the research base in Antarctica said they just recorded the hottest temperature ever in the continent. Scientists believed the global warming issue caused the ice sheets to rapidly melt.

On Friday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokeswoman Clare Nullis said Esperanza base has recorded a temperature of 18.3 degrees Celsius.

“(This) is not a figure you would normally associate with Antarctica even in the summertime. This beat the former record of 17.5 degrees C, which was set back in 2015…” she said.

“The Antarctic peninsula … is among the fastest-warming regions of the planet. We hear a lot about the Arctic, but this particular part of the Antarctic peninsula is warming very quickly,” she added.

According to the report, the giant ice sheets in the Antarctic is now on course to break. It will increase the amount of water in the ocean of at least three (3) meters over centuries.

“The amount of ice lost annually from the Antarctic ice sheet increased at least six-fold between 1979 and 2017. The melting from these glaciers, you know, means we are in big trouble when it comes to sea-level rise,” Nullis said.
