PHIVOLCS: Taal Generates 156 Volcanic Earthquakes That Could Lead to Eruptive Activity

Taal Generates 156 Volcanic Earthquakes Indicating Magmatic Activity That Could Lead to Eruptive Activity, Phivolcs Says

The state seismology agency Phivolcs reported that Taal Volcano generates 156 volcanic earthquakes that could lead to eruptive activity.

On Wednesday (February 5, 2020), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology announced that Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, more than three weeks after its initial eruption.

Phivolcs announced on their daily bulletin that 156 volcanic earthquakes including two low-frequency events and 18 harmonic tremors lasting for one to three minutes have been recorded in the past 24 hours.

The United States Geological Survey explained that the cracks resonating as magma and gases moving towards the surface are causing low-frequency earthquakes while harmonic tremors usually accompany volcanic eruptions.

“These earthquakes signify magmatic activity beneath the Taal edifice that could lead to eruptive activity at the Main Crater,” Phivolcs said.

The volcanology agency said that the volcanic earthquakes indicate magmatic activity beneath the volcano could lead to eruptive activity at Taal’s main crater.

Meanwhile, the amount of sulfur dioxide from Taal Volcano has reduced to 55 tonnes per day, which much lower compared to the previous 231 tonnes per day. Taal has been weakly emitting steam-laden plumes 50 to 100 meters tall during the previous day.
