Senators Call Out Seller That Commit Face Mask Overpricing Following Taal Eruption

FACE MASK OVERPRICING – Retailers who have overpriced facemasks following the eruption of Taal Volcano were called out by Senators.

The prices of face masks in Manila climbed up to P200 due to the eruption of Taal Volcano, Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan says.

Lacuna-Pangan revealed that her office received reports that N95 masks were being sold for P200 from the previous P25 to P30 only. She ordered the authorities to inspect the stores and check the retailers regarding the information.

According to a report from Inquirer, Senator Aquilino Pimentel III stated:

We should not allow anybody to take advantage of the current difficult situation brought about by the Taal Volcano eruption by increasing the price of needed goods and materials

He added that abuses such as overpricing much neede face masks are a violation of the Price Act. The Senator then stated that any abusers could be directly reported to his office.

As per the report, Senator Grace Poe also lamented on the overpricing of face masks. She stated that in this time of crisis, people should not be taking advantage, instead, we should be helping each other.

Taal Volcano erupted on Sunday (January 12, 2020) belching ashes and small stones. Several local government units suspended the classes and government works to ensure the safety of the students and employees.

The state seismology agency Phivolcs said that volcanic ashes continue to affect numerous areas. Phivolcs advised the residents to stay at home, wear face masks, and to close the windows.
