The pro-environment group EcoWaste Coalition is disappointed with Black Nazarene devotees because, despite their call to make Traslacion 2020 “trash-less”, there is still a lot of waste left in the procession route.

Recently, the EcoWaste Coalition Facebook page uploaded some photos of tons of garbage scattered everywhere. In a statement on the group, they said that they, too, had ignored the call of the Quiapo Church and the Manila City government to avoid littering on the Black Nazarene Traslacion.

In the photos, lots of trash and plastic bags filled with rubbish such as leftover food, plastic bottles filled with urine, dirty diapers and more were seen by the group despite signages around Rizal Park banning the littering in the park.

Despite devotees repeatedly ignoring their reminders, the group still hopes that in the coming years, people will be participating in the process and will learn to leave no waste.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said they expect up to 150 tons of waste to be collected by the end of Traslacion. “We are expecting around 130 to 150 tons of garbage,” said Mayor Isko.

Although many garbage was collected, it was less than last year when 100 garbage truck were filled with garbage. He said the “zero vendor policy” along the Traslacion route has helped to reduce waste.
