Ursula On Path To Cover Almost All Of Visayas, Residents Urged To Evacuate
URSULA – The Christmas Storm Ursula is expected to make landfall on Tuesday afternoon or evening leaving almost the whole of Visayas covered in heavy rains.
With this, residents that live in flood and landslide-prone areas that are on Ursula’s path are urged to evacuate to safer ground. The head of the disaster agency advised the resident to move out before it hits the Visayas on Christmas Eve.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Ricard Jalad, residents should move before the storm makes landfall. He emphasized that evacuating at night would be more difficult.
Along with this, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned yesterday that Ursula could potentially intensify into a typhoon before it reaches land.
According to an article by ABS-CBN, the storm would bring heavy rains and strong winds. Jalad noted that as the storm travels through the seas, it could pick up its strength.
Ursula is packed with maximum sustained winds of about 95 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 115 kilometers per hour. It is currently moving west-northwest at 30 kilometers per hour.
During an interview with DZMM, Jalad hoped that residents would follow the advice posted by the NDRRMC. He also emphasized that barangay heads should play a key role during the evacuation compliances.
Because of the heavy rains and winds brought by the storm, several areas in the Philippines have been under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 and No. 1.
