A family usually consists of a father, mother and children, sometimes including grandparents, uncles, and aunts.

There are, however, situations where a family can consists of a single parent, or it also includes cousins and second cousins, such is the case of extended families.

So here are the following types, according to lovetoknow:

  • Nuclear Family
    • The most common type. As mentioned above, it consists of two parents and children and is known as the most ideal type.
  • Single Parent Family
    • This type consists of one parent, regardless of gender, raising one or more children on his or her own. It is the biggest change society has seen in the aspect of changes in the family structures.
  • Extended Family
    • Similar to nuclear family, only with relatives such as cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents living in the same house.
  • Childless Family
    • Consists of couples who do not have children. They are also known as the “forgotten family” since it does not meet with the traditional standards set by society.
  • Step Family or Blended Family
    • This type is the result of divorce and the remarriage of individuals. This type consists of a parent with his or her children with their new father or mother called stepfather or stepmother, respectively.
  • Grandparent Family
    • This type consists of grandparents raising their grandchildren for various reasons.
