The province is located in the region of Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao. It was formerly a part of the province of Zamboanga del Sur.

It is one of the four newest province in the Philippines, with the others being Davao De Oro (formerly Compostela Valley), Dinagat Islands, and Davao Occidental).
Its capital is Ipil and has a landmass of about 3.6K kilometers squared or 1.3K square miles.
In the 1960s, several bills were filed in the Philippine Congress to separate Zamboanga del Sur but they were remained unacted.
The province was created under Republic Act No. 8973 which was signed by ex-president and ex-mayor Joseph Estrada in 2000.
