Known officially as the Republic of Uzbekistan, it is a landlocked country in the central region of Asia. It was formerly a Soviet Republic.

Its official language is Uzbek and its other languages is Karakalpak in the Republic of Karakalpakstan; and Russian, since it was a republic of the Soviets. It is known locally as Ózbekiston Respublikasi.

It is bordered by the following landlocked areas:

  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Tajikistan
  • Afghanistan
  • Turkmenistan

It is by far, one of the two doubly landlocked countries along with the Principality of Liechtenstein or simply Liechtenstein.

Its capital city is Tashkent and has a population of about 32 million people, making it the 41st most populous country in the world.

It has a landmass of about 448K kilometer squared or 173K square miles.

Its government is a unitary presidential constitutional republic that is cvurrently governed by Shavkat Mirziyoyev as of this writing.

Etymology

The name of the nation means the “land of the Uzbeks”. It is derived from the two words:

  • “Uzbek”
    • Some of its possible origins are the following:
      • named after the legendary Turkic khan Oghuz Khagan or Oghuz Beg
      • it means independent or the lord itself from the term O’z and the Turkic title Bek, Bey, or Beg.
      • The pronunciation of Uz comes from Uz or Uguz, one of the Oghuz Turks.
  • “-stan”
    • The Persian suffix which means “the land of”
