Recently the Metro Manila wage board has approved raising the minimum monthly salary from P3,500 to P5,000. According to reports, the pay hike would take effect 15 days after it is published in a major newspaper.

During an interview with DZMM, Ted Failon jokingly cited to Bello that nowadays, nobody gives a salary of P5,000. Bello confirmed Ted’s statement.

In the interview, Bello added that he wanted the increase to be P6,000. But, that the decision was merely out of his control.

However, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello stated that the labor department lacked the authority to penalize employers who don’t abide by the new law. He added that a law is needed to provide the agency with the power.

Marami kaming mga order hindi sinusunod kasi wala kaming sapat na kapangyarihan“, said Bello. He then cited an example where workers would would be employed without any permits.

Bello stated that the best they could do is to report them to immigration and have them deported. However, he wanted to have the power to suspend.

Ted then asked about where employees could file a report if employers do not abide by the law. Bello answered that they could go to DOLE or NLRC if you’ve decided to file a demand.

However, Bello lamented that the process takes too much time. He cited that the employees need to find themselves a lawyer and gather all the requirements.
