MORPHOLOGY – In this topic, we will now know the meaning of morphology and some other stuff to know about this study.

MORPHOLOGY

Meaning

Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relation to other words in the same language.

The study also analyzes the structure of words and word parts like stems, root words, prefixes and suffixes. This also covers part of speech; intonation and stress; and the context’s ability to change the pronunciation and meaning of the word.

This is not to be mistaken with morphological typology, which fixates in the classifying of language based on their use of words; and lexicology, which is focused on words and how they construct the vocabulary of a particular language.

Models

There are three models or principal approaches to morphology:

  • Morpheme-based
    • In this model, word forms are analyzed as arrangements of morphemes. Morphemes is described as the minimal meaning full unit of a language.
  • Lexeme-based
    • Here, it is using the item-and-process approach. It believes that a word from is the result of applying rules that alter a word-form or stem to create a new one.
  • Word-based
    • It is commonly a word-and paradigm approach. This model states generalizations that hold between the forms of inflectional paradigms.
