King Sargon was the first emperor of the world. Known as King Sargon of Akkad, he established the world’s first empire more than 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia.
His name meant “True King” and he took advantage of that presumed title to build up the first empire in the world around 2330 B.C. He built his empire in the fertile lands of Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
According to legend, Sargon of Akkad was born in secrecy to a priestess mother. He was then set adrift on a river where he was discovered by a common laborer who raised him.
Based on an article from National Geographic, he was then visited by Ishtar, the goddess of desire, fertility, storms, and warfare. The future King was inspired by her, rose to obscurity and took the world by storm.
Sargon began his rise to power as a simple cupbearer to the king of Kish. Eventually, he got to overthrow the king and led troops against the great rival ruler of the south, Lugalzagesi.
This ruler had control over all of Sumer. However, Sargon captured him and placed a yoke around his neck.
Because of the new King’s rise to power, he sent Akkadian governors to rule Sumerian cities and tore down its falls. He also lowered physical and linguistic barriers which unified his realm.
Along with this, he promoted commerce both inside Mesopotamia and beyond its walls. This led to a thriving trade with India who brought pearls, wood, and ivory in exchange for wool and olive oil.
During this time, precious metals like copper and silver served as the currency for traders. Metal was weighed on a scale to determine its value.
Sargon also collected taxes from merchants in order to pay his soldiers and support the artistry. They then glorified his deeds in sculptures and inscriptions.
