This, in turn, created a sub-culture of education professionals that give out grades based on the number of likes a student’s project can get on social media.

However, this caused concern for child development expert Clarissa Ligon. During an interview with DZMM, Ligon shared her thoughts on the issue.

According to her, young children create social media accounts because of projects required by schools. She added that there are projects where the higher the likes are, the higher the grade.

Siyempre ikaw naman bilang estudyante, kailangan gawin mo siya tapos ‘yong parent, isu-support. Kaya mayroon tayong mga bata na nagkakaroon ng account sa social media,

In the interview, she echoed her concern for the kind of grading system that is based on likes from social media. She said that it breeds a mindset that stated that if you don’t have many likes, you don’t have a good project.

According to Ligon, this leads to a child finding validation on social media likes. With this, she added that further along the way, this yearning for validation could cause depression.

Yan daw ang nagiging cause ng depression. Kapag kaunti ang likes, they feel invalidated

Yan ang side na ‘di maganda sa social media

The topic was opened up during a discussion about kids using social media. This was following an appeal to have kids below 13 years-old banned from social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
