The movie, entitled “Elcano y Magallanes, La Primera Vuelta al Mundo” (Elcano and Magellan, The First Voyage Around The World), drew flak on its teaser, where netizens pointed out certain inaccuracies of the movie on the history of the voyage of Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

The movie, as netizens pointed out, depicted Lapu-Lapu, the first ever Filipino hero, as a villain. The leader of Mactan waged a war against the Spaniards, which is soon to be known as the Battle of Mactan, where Magellan met his fate.

Recently, the lawmakers urged MTRCB to thoroughly review the said film to see if it has to be banned or some parts omitted if it tarnished the name of Lapu-Lapu.

According to Inquirer, Agusan del Norte 1st District Rep. Lawrence Fortun said that there will possibly be instances where Lapu-Lapu will be seen as the villain in the movie, further saying that Filipino will not allow such a lie to be spread on the country.

He further said that Philippine history experts should be involved in reviewing the movie in order to give a more thorough perspective and ensure that the movie will not dishonor Lapu-Lapu’s rightful place in our collective memory.

He, however, did not disregard the vitality of the first ever circumnavigation of the world in human history. He hoped that the revision will not demoralize the remarkable courage shown by the early Filipinos in fighting for freedom and independence.

Based on the report, Salvador Panelo said on Thursday that it is up to the MTRCB to decide whether the film is banned or not.
