This is where the photosynthesis, a process that converts sunlight energy to make oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds, occurs.

It is a type of plastid that has the role to synthesize and store foodstuffs.

Here are the following parts, according to A Level Biology:

  • Outer Membrane
    • A semi-porous membrane that is permeable to small molecules and ions that can be easily diffused.
  • Intermembrane Space
    • A thin space that is about 10 to 20 nanometers and is present between the outer and inner membranes
  • Inner Membrane
    • Its function is to regulate passage of materials that goes in and out of the chloroplast. This is also where the fatty acids, lipids and carotenoids are synthesized.
  • Stroma
    • An alkaline, aqueous fluid that is rich in protein. This is present inside the inner membrane. It is also where the DNA chlroplast ribosomes and the thylakoid sytem, starch granules and many proteins float.
  • Thykaloid System
    • A system floating in the stroma. It is a cllection of membranous sacks, also known as thykaloids. This is where the chlorophyll is found and where the light reactions of photosynthesis occurs.
