Summary Of The Three Brothers Of Fortune, A Filipino Tale
THREE BROTHERS OF FORTUNE – In this topic, we will now know the summary of a Filipino tale called the Three Brothers of Fortune.
According to the MythFolklore, the tale was narrated by a Pangasinense called Eugenio Estayo. Estayo heard this story to another Pangasinense named Toribio Serafica.
Here is the summary of the Filipino tale:
There lived a wealthy man in a village who had three sons: Suan, Iloy and Ambo. The man is fond of knowledhe that he sent the boys to another town to school. However, the sons lived in idleness and extravagance. They are ashamed to go back home every vacation so they wandered from town to town to look for fortunes.
One day, they met an old woman who asked them to buy a book. Ambo asked the virtue of the book, in which she said that it has the ability to revive the dead just by placing the book near him, which Ambo bought.
They met another woman who aimed to sell the mat that would make them fly once stepped on it. Iloy bought the mat, leaving Suan to be the only one who had no charm.
Suan beforehand found two stones that will unite once in a while to form one black stone and separate again. Believing that this will unite things of the same kind, he kept the stones.
As they moved on, they found a dead body of a young woman. Ambo used the book to revive the woman and Iloy used the mat to travel to the seashore and rode a ship.
The ship encountered a severe storm which wrecked it, only to be restored by Suan, who unites the stones. They had a debate as to who deserves to be with the woman.
They took the debate to the king, who said to divide the woman into three. Iloy and Ambo were discontented with what they have so they discarded the parts. Suan, however, used the stones again and the woman was whole, leaving Suan the most fortunate brother.
