TUCP Warns Proposed 2-Year Probationary Period To Force Pinoy Employees To Work Abroad

Proposed 2-Year Probationary Period To Force Pinoy Employees To Work Abroad, TUCP Says

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines warned that the proposed 2-year probationary period might force Pinoy employees to work abroad.

Raymond Mendoza, the president of TUCP said that the proposed two-year probationary period for new employees might cause negative effect the country’s economy. The proposed measure might also force Filipinos to seek employment in other countries.

Mendoza explained that the House Bill 4802 would intensify the short-term labor slavery practice in the Philippines. He also described the measure as disadvantageous because it will only expand the gap between rich and poor.

Probationary Period

Probinsiyano party-list Rep. Jose Singson Jr. authored the proposed House Bill 4802, which will prolong the current six-month probationary period to two years. Singson said that six months are not enough to determine if a certain employee deserved to be regularized.

Workers under probationary period could not enjoy benefits for regular employees including 13th month pay, Christmas bonus, allowances, separation pay, paternity and maternity leave as well as vacation and sick leave.

“Extending the probationary employment period to two years is a race to the bottom scheme because it will improve the currently widely practiced endo labor slavery system and will make contractualized work permanent in the country,” Mendoza said.
