According to LiveScience, this refers to an aspect the electromagnetic force. It is also a physical phenomena that occur from the force that is caused by magnets.

A magnet is an object that creates fields that attract or repel other objects. The motion of particles that are electrically charged is what causes this phenomena and its force depends on the magnitude of the charge, the velocity of the particle, and the strength of the magnetic field.

All things face magnetism but it varies from each other. Magnets made from materials like iron, called permanent magnets, has the strongest effects.

The fields are produced via roating elecric charges. THe electrons have a property of what they call angular momentum or in basic terms, spin.

These electrons usually form pairs, where one of them spun up and the other spun down, which is in lieu of the Pauli Exclusion Principle, where two electrons cannot occupy the same energy state at the same time, hence, these fields cancel each other since they are from opposite directions.

There are, however, atoms that has one or more unpaired electrons which has a spin that generates a directional magnetic field.

The sources of the magnetic field are dipolar, which, in this case, have a north and south magnetic pole. The North and South poles attract, while both fields of the same poles (North and North; or South and South) repel.
