ORDER OF THE NATIONAL ARTISTS – In this topic, we will now know and discuss the Order of The National Artists of the Philippines.

ORDER OF THE NATIONAL ARTISTS

The Order of The National Artists of the Philippines or the Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining, according to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is the highest national recognition which is given to Filipino artist who made significant contributions for the development of arts in the Philippines.

These contributions will fall under the following categories:

  • Dance – choreography, direction and/or performance
  • Music – composition, direction, and/or performance
  • Theater – direction, performance and/or production design
  • Visual Arts – painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation art, mixed media works, illustration, graphic arts, performance art and/or imaging
  • Literature – poetry, fiction, essay, playwriting, journalism and/or literary criticism
  • Film and Broadcast Arts – direction, writing, production design, cinematography, editing, camera work, and/or performance
  • Architecture, Design and Allied Arts – architecture design, interior design, industrial arts design, landscape architecture and fashion design.

This was materialized in accordance to Proclamation No. 1001 in April 1972 in order to give formal recognition and prestige to Filipinos who have become well-known and made exemplary contributions to the Philippine arts and letters.

Proclamation No. 1144 was made in 173 to assign the CCP Board of Trustees as the National Artist Awards Committee. Presidential Decree No. 208 was issude in 1973 mandates the CCP to administer the Awards and the privileges and honors to National Artists.

The artists who made contributions will earn the award the “National Artists of the Philippines”. The order is one of the Honors in the country which embodies the country’s highest ideals in humanism and aesthetic expression via the distinct achievements of individual citizens.

The first ever artist to be awarded this title is a famous Filipino painter named Fernando C. Amorsolo, who is the National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts – Painting.
