Panelo had accepted the youth group’s challenge on Wednesday night. The Presidential Spokesperson said that he would take public transport to work on Friday.

For the past week, commuters have been struggling to get to their destinations as the LRT-2 suspends operations after a reported blast. Passengers were told to disembark for their own safety.

Anakbayan and Kilusang Mayo Uno had challenged Panelo to commute to work after the Spokesperson denied that there was no transport crisis in the country. They also set the rules for the challenge.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, the rules, according to Anakbayan national spokesperson Alex Danday were:

  • Travel during early morning rush hour
  • No special treatment
  • No bodyguards
  • Panelo must commute for a whole week
  • Anakbayan will accompany Panelo

Anakbayan had also challenged President Rodrigo Duterte, Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade, and Celine Pialago the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority spokesperson.

The challenge was made by the youth group as a means to push for a pro-people mass transport system. Danday added that the system should be efficient, affordable and free from corporate control.

They were all challenged to work every day for a week for them to experience the “hellish realities of our everyday commute”. However, initially, Panelo declined the challenge and called it “silly”.

Because of the hard time of commuters, some groups like Angkas offered free rides. There was also an individual that gave free rides to students.
