Who Is Called The “Poet Of Angono”? A National Artist In The Philippines

There are many artists who are known for many things, like Lucio San Pedro, the composer of the song “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” who was hailed the National Artist of the Philippines for Music, or Levi Celerio, who is a National Artist of the Philippines for Music and Literature and is known to be the only Leaf Player in his time.
There is one National Artist of the Philippines who is dubbed the “Poet of Angono” and is none other than Carlos “Botong” Francisco.
Carlos Modesto “Botong” Villaluz Francisco is a mural painter from the municipality of Angono, Rizal and is awarded the National Artist for Visual Arts.
Francisco is one of the first ever Filipino artists to use modernism, along with Galo Ocampo and Victorio C. Edades. Helmuth Josef Zotter, a restorer, described Francisco’s art as a prime example of linear painting where lines and contours appear like cutouts.
Fernando also is known for the discovery of the now-known Angono Petroglyphs when he was in the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
