Senator Risa Hontiveros Appalled By Annulment Scam
ANA THERESIA HONTIVEROS – Senator Risa Hontiveros on Tuesday detested the alleged annulment scam, wherein couples have to give up to P700,000 to have their marriage dissolved.
Senator Hontiveros revealed the scam during the first public hearing on for bills aiming for the acceptance of a law on divorce. This also included the dissolution of marriage.
The Senator stated that other lawyers allegedly suggested annulments to dis-affectionate couples to collect fees. This was even though annulment was not necessary, she added.
She then lamented on the possibility of having an annulment scam. She added that if that were to happen, the heartbreak and despair of the Filipino people would be exploited for money.
Afterwards Hontiveros said that in some cases couples needed to shell out P100,000 as a psychologist’s fee. Adding to this there was also a P100,000 lawyer’s fee stacked on the lawyer’s appearance fee.
She then stated that according to research, the annulment process in the Philippines averaged to go up to P700,000. Hontiveros added that the divorce law was not for Duterte and Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Caprio.
According to Manila Times, The Senator hoped that it wouldn’t be a hindrance if the President and the Davao mayor wasn’t in favor of her proposal. She then added that after all, they have a happy marriage.
She also stated that that is always something to celebrate. However, she emphasized that the bill is not for them.
“This is for our fellowmen who need, want and I would say deserve, second chances,” Hontiveros said. She then stressed that the divorce-bill is pro-marriage, pro-family and pro-children.
The Senator then expressed that the bill would make us respect marriage more. This is due to us being more discerning with our life choices, she added.
She also said that it protects the children from abuse. Afterwards, she stated that it rebuilds broken families and gives people a new page in life.
