Negros Occidental Bans Entry Of Pork Products From Luzon
NEGROS OCCIDENTAL – The government of Negros Occidental has prohibited the entry of pork products including live hogs as well as pork meat and others.
The ban on pork products from Luzon would last for the duration of 90 days. This is due to the rampant cases of African Swine Fever (ASF).
With this, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson authorized Resolution 19-05 submitted by the province’s AFS task force. The body suggested the momentary ban that included processed or manufactured pork products from Luzon.
Provincial veterinarian Renate Decena stated that the governor shall issue a memorandum. He added that this would be addressed to him, as well as municipal and city mayors for the implementation of Resolution 19-05.
Recently, the Department of Agriculture (DA) had confirmed that the cause of swine deaths in Bulacan and Rizan was due to ASF. With Bulacan said to be ground zero for the disease.
In lieu of this Governor Lacson made an appeal to travelers coming into Negros Occidental. He urged travelers not to bring back any pork products from Luzon into the province.
According to the Manila Times, the provincial ASF task force emphasized the need to protect the swine population of the province. Moreover, the need to protect the P6-billion swine industry.
The ASF task force added that pork products from Luzon, be it fresh or processed may potentially carry the ASF virus. This could then be carried into Negros Occidental, said the task force.
Statistics from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) showed that Negros Occidental is the Philippine’s top backyard hog producer. Negros racks up 510,000 in swine production annually.
In relation to this, the task force had confiscated 5 tons of undocumented pork products. These products were taken at the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp port and was valued at P500,000.
