Everyone has experienced having their computers infected by a virus before. There are those that are quite harmless but a bit annoying, and there are those that do and corrupts data, crashes the system and, if worse, renders computers useless.

Here, we will take a look at some of the viruses that are well-known throughout history, according to Popsci:

Computer Viruses

  1. Creeper
    • Possibly the first ever computer virus, it was developed in 1971. The virus infected PDP-11 computers that are connected to the ARPANET (predecessor to the Internet). The infected computers will display the message: “I’m the creeper, catch me if you can!”
  2. Elk Cloner
    • Developed by a high-schooler in 1982, this infects Apple II computers with the use of a floppy disk. Infected computers will display a poem from the hacker every 50th boot.
  3. Morris Worm
    • Made by Robert Morris in 1988. This virus led to the arrest of Morris, becoming the first person convicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
  4. ILOVEYOU
    • The virus that is the cause of a “massive estimated financial damage, with millions of computers infected,”. Disguised as a love letter from someone in a user’s e-mail address book, which urges the user to open the virus.
  5. Code Red
    • This virus was named after Mountain Dew Code Red, a drink which was chosen by the first researchers who examined it. This is one of the most persistent worms which infected at about 360, 000 computers in one day. The worm can reinfect the same computer it was removed from.
