According to the report, two employees at the Herpetological Associates of Burlington County found the two-headed rattlesnake in a nest. The CEO of the organization, Bob Zappalorti, said this rare snake “probably wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild.”

“As it was crawling, there’s a chance it could have gotten snagged on something, leaving it open to be eaten by predators,” he added.

Bob Zappalorti said it’s the first time in their state to find a two-headed snake. He also said that the reptiles have two brains that act independently. “It probably was meant to be a twin and it mutated and the female gave birth to this abnormal baby,” he said. Their organization is currently taking care of the snakes.

Based on the report, the National Geographic explained why these two-headed snakes won’t survive in the wild. “Snakes operate a good deal by smell, and if one head catches the scent of prey on the other’s head, it will attack and try to swallow the second head,” it said.
