104 New Whale Shark Individuals Spotted In Sorsogon
WHALE SHARKS – Over a hundred new whale sharks individuals spotted in Donsol, Sorsogon in the first half of 2019.
A whale shark locally known as “Butanding” pose no threat to humans that is why the local and foreign tourist visit Tan-awan, Oslob Cebu Philippines to have a remarkable experience with these giant fish. During summers, thousands of visitor flock to the beautiful beach to have a swim with “Butandings.”
The Butanding tourism in Cebu is a big thing in the country. People on the area were glad that the biggest species of fish in the ocean is in their waters because they earn better income.
Based on a report from Inquirer, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in the Philippines said over a hundred Butandings were spotted in Donsol, Sorsogon province in the first half of 2019. The agency said this is the highest numbers of the whale sharks seen in the area.
In January and June, the WWF spotted a total of 104 new whale sharks were in Ticao Pass. The current number of the identified whale sharks placed a total number of 676 since their 2007 monitoring.
According to the report, the project manager of WWF, Manuel Narvez, said the presence of Butanding in Sorsogon indicates that the waters in the area are now rich with their primary food, the planktons. These species also use the area as their “pupping ground.”
“The number of whale sharks spotted in Donsol indicates that its waters are now rich with plankton, which is their primary food. They have even come here with their young,” said Narvez.
Based on the report, between 2017 and 2018, the agency only spotted 22 new butandings. With this new sightings, they have identified 1,724 whale sharks in the country.
