It was previously reported that on July, the DOH declared a nationwide dengue alert due to the rapid increase of the number of cases. Then on August 7, the health agency declared a national epidemic due to their discovery that around 5, 100 cases per week people got infected by the mosquito-born disease.

The number of cases, which was previously 106, 630 cases as of June 29, is now at 167, 606 as of July 27 and counting, with 661 fatalities. 30, 000 of these cases are children aged between 5 years old to 9 years old.

A report in Inquirer states that Human Rights spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said that the government has the responsibility to guard the children from dangers like health risks and diseases.

De Guia further added that the virus is a major threat to children and adults alike, citing what experts said about the effect of global warming that could possibly worsen the dengue outbreak, eventually increasing the number of mosquitoes and their range.

As per the report, she added that the commission is currently vigilant to the situation and observing the steps the government took in dealing with the epidemic.

De Guia further added that they urged the public to collaborate with the efforts of the government, to take heed of reminders and warnings, and aid with sharing information, in lieu with the commissions duty to uphold and guard the health and welfare to the Filipinos and the Filipino children.

The agency said that they are aware of the Department of Health’s (DOH) intensified efforts on purging the breeding sites of mosquitoes. DOH also ensured to the mass that the public health centers and hospitals are open to tend to dengue cases, especially in areas with the highest rates of infection.
