Cebu Ferry Catches Fire

Three passengers died and 23 others gone missing after Cebu Ferry catches fire while traveling towards Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.

On Tuesday (August 27, 2019), the engine room of M/V Lite Ferry 16 catches fire around 1.5 nautical miles from Polauan Port in Dapitan City. The sea craft is carrying 136 passengers and 40 crew members when the incident happened.

On Wednesday (August 28, 2019), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Cebu Station Deputy Commander Alvin Dagalea reported that three passengers died including two adults and an infant while 23 others are still missing.

Around 110 passengers have been rescued and most of them are now at the Dapitan City Resort Hotel.

The fire allegedly started inside the engine room of the vessel, according to the initial report of the Philippine Coast Guard Northern Mindanao. The incident started around 11:30 pm on Tuesday prompting some passengers to jump into the sea.

A passing Fast Cat rescued the passengers three to four hours after the fire broke out and engulfed one-third of the ship. One of the passenger identified as Fred Castro said that the Philippine Coast Guard personnel came to rescue the passengers.
