Filipino Couple Charged in Elderly Man’s Death
FILIPINO COUPLE – The Filipino couple named Joseph and Lolita Somera were arrested after the death of the 69-year-old man from heat exposure.
There are lots of Filipinos abroad who work as caregivers or nurses. Over 10 thousand nurses leave the country each year to earn a better salary in different countries.
It’s normal to make mistakes but when working in a health care profession, near misses and errors are unacceptable because the patient’s welfare is at stake. All hospitals and clinics are aiming to improve their service yearly.
Following a previous article, a Filipina caregiver and her boyfriend were sued after they reportedly harassed their 91-year-old patient who is diagnosed with dementia. The couple shared a Snapchat video of them taunting the old woman with a hospital gown.
The family of the patient filed a lawsuit and seeks $1 million from the couple. The old woman is transferred to another facility while the two caregivers are behind bars.
Pinoy couple the United States were arrested over the death of a senior citizen in Arizona. Based on a report from GMA News, the 69-year-old man spent two days inside the home-based living facility of the couple without air-conditioning.
The police officers said Lolita Somera and Joseph Somera manage and operate their own facility called “Happy Homes Assisted Living Facility” in northwest Chandler.
According to the report, the authorities said the temperature inside the facility was 94 degrees while 100 degrees in the man’s room. They also found out that the AC had not been working for three days.
The patient suffered from complicated acute pneumonia due to environmental heat exposure. Due to alleged neglect, the couple was arrested and charged with a class three felony and one count of vulnerable adult abuse.
