Filipina Caregiver, Boyfriend Accused of Harassing 91-Year-Old Woman
FILIPINA – A Filipina caregiver and her boyfriend were sued after reportedly harassing a dementia patient in Illinois.
We can’t deny that we sometimes want to annoy or tease someone intentionally but it does not have to go too far. There are some people who get angry easily and take the remark as hostile.
Teasing depends on the person who is taking it. If it is done repeatedly, it becomes bullying, taunting or harassment. No one deserves to be taunted by other people.
Based on a report from ABS-CBN News, a Pinay caregiver and her boyfriend were accused of harassing a dementia patient on snap chat. Jamie Montesa and Brayan Cortez worked as caregivers as at a nursing home in Glenview, Illinois.
The couple was fired from the Abington of Glenview. The authorities arrested and charged them with disorderly conduct.
According to the report, the video that the couple took last December 2018 surfaced on the messaging app Snapchat. The two Pinoy caregivers allegedly taunted the 91-year-old dementia patient’s dislike for hospital gowns.
The guy allegedly waved the hospital gown at Margaret Collins while the Filipina took the video of the incident. It came with a caption, “Margaret hates gowns.”
Based on the report, the family of the patient filed a lawsuit against the two caregivers. Margaret’s family seeks $1 million in damages due to negligence, violation of the Nursing Home Care Act, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The lawyer of Collins family, Margaret Battersby Black, gave a statement about the issue.
“That’s exactly what this is. It’s abuse… They knew that she didn’t like this and they persisted in doing it,” she said.
The dementia patient was moved to a different facility while the Cortez and Montesa are scheduled to appear in court.
