The Ruins is not just a beautiful sight – it also holds a beautiful history about a love that only grew much stronger even after the death of another. Behind this remains of a Neo-Romanesque mansion is the love story of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson and his wife Maria Braga.
Based on the official page of the said Negros tourist spot, Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson was a rich bachelor who loves to travel the world with his wealthy friend. He has seven older brothers and sisters.
In one of his trips, particularly in old Hong Kong, he saw Maria Braga – the daughter of a captain who has a ship of his own. Believing that they are a “match made in heaven”, he talked to Maria and her father.
Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson was successful at winning Maria Braga’s heart and they married each other. The happy couple was blessed with ten children namely Victoria, Rafael, Mercedes, Natividad, Sofia, Felipe, Consolacion, Angelina, Ramon, and Eduardo.
However, the happy days of the two significant people behind The Ruins was followed by an unexpected incident that took the life of Maria. She was pregnant with their eleventh child when she met an accident – she slipped on their bathroom.
Based on the page, during that time, it would take a total of four days to fetch the nearest physician (in Silay City) and bring her to attend to Maria’s needs. Before the doctor has arrived, Don Mariano’s wife and baby have passed away leaving him greatly heartbroken.
Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson’s intense love and desire to keep his wife Maria Braga forever in his memory led him to build a mansion for him and their children – its remains is now known as The Ruins.
With the help of Maria’s father, Don Mariano was able to put up a big home for him and his children. All the sons were assigned on the ground level while the daughters were on the second level of the mansion.
However, based on the page, later on, the intense incidents between the Americans and the Japanese before have affected the mansion to the point of taking down its roof.
Meanwhile, with the “A-grade mixture”, the structure and the concrete posts of the early 20th Century mansion remained standing like the love of Don Mariano for his wife Maria even after her death.
