A report in ABS-CBN states that illegally parked vehicles are also one of the main reasons of heavy traffic, according to Jonathan Malaya, the agency’s undersecretary.

They urged the Congress to make a policy that nullifies the sale of vehicles to those who do not have a parking space or cannot prove that they have a garage.

Malaya further said that they will back Senate Bill 201, also known as the Proof of Parking Space act made by Senator Sherwin Gatchallian.

The filed bill states that individuals and business that are based in Metro Manila will be qualified to buy vehicles only if thry have an affidavit or proof that they have acquired a parking space via purchase or lease.

Based on the report, Malaya further said that they support the bill because they believe that this can be a long-lasting solution to parking and traffic issues.

In lieu of solving traffic issues like the clearing of the streets to make Metro Manila cities walkable, DILG secretary Año gave the Metro Manila mayors 60 days which started last Monday. Malaya said they are happy with the results so far.

Should the mayors choose to violate or fail to comply with the time limit, they will reportedly face suspension.
