Family Run For Their Lives As House Collapse During Batanes Quake
BATANES QUAKE – A family managed to get out of their house after the strong earthquake in Batanes today.
Itbayat, Batanes was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake around 7:38 a.m today, July 14, 2019. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded three quakes today on the area.
The town Mayor, Ruel De Sagon, said the quake victims are mostly from Barangay Santa Maria, Itbayat. The residents were buried by the debris in their houses.
“Nadaganan sila doon sa mga bahay nila… Nakaano [tira] kasi sila sa old houses na made of lime[stones] na walang bakal,” said Sagon.
Mayor Ruel De Sagon said several people died after the strong earthquake. The patient in their hospitals was transferred to the plaza.
He also called for help from the provincial capital and asked for a chopper to transfer their patients to a bigger hospital. Sagon specifically asked for an air vessel because he’s certain that waves will be bigger after the shake.
“Hindi kasi kami sigurado sa sea [transport] kasi baka mag-generate din ito [lindol] ng malalaking alon pag ganito kalakas,” he said.
Several photos and video clips of the aftermath of the strong earthquake were shared on social media sites.
Recently, a video of a family who successfully got out of their collapsed house went viral on the internet. The video was shared by a netizen named Dominic Asa and was uploaded on the Facebook Page of ABS-CBN News.
