Several Dead In 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake in Itbayat, Batanes
BATANES QUAKE – Itbayat, Batanes Mayor said several people died after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake today, July 27.
The province of Batanes is located on the northernmost part of the Philippines. It has a small population and land area.
Earlier today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that Batanes was hit by a strong earthquake.
In a report, the 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Itbayat, Batanes around 7:38 a.m. today, July 27, 2019.
Based on a report from ABS-CBN, Mayor Raul De Sagon said 5 people died after the consecutive shakes in their area.
Philvolcs Director Renato Solidum said a magnitude 5 quake hit Batanes around 4 a.m. then followed by a 3.2 magnitude quake and a 6.4 magnitude hit at 7:38 a.m.
According to the report, Mayor Raul De Sagon most of the quake victims are residents from Barangay Santa Maria in Itbayat. He told the DZMM radio that those people were buried by the debris in their old houses made of limestones without metal auxiliaries.
“Nadaganan sila doon sa mga bahay nila… Nakaano [tira] kasi sila sa old houses na made of lime[stones] na walang bakal,” he said.
The mayor instructed all the patients in their old hospital to stay in their plaza for the meantime in case there will be more aftershocks.
“Itong hospital dito ay old building kaya pinalabas ko na din ‘yung mga pasyente. Nandito kami sa plaza ngayon nagco-conduct ng first aid,” said De Sagon.
Mayor Raul De Sagon have requested for help from the provincial capital. He asked to transfer their patients to bigger hospitals in Luzon and choppers oversea vessels because of their might big waves after the quake.
“Hindi kasi kami sigurado sa sea [transport] kasi baka mag-generate din ito [lindol] ng malalaking alon pag ganito kalakas,” he said.
Based on the report, Raul De Sagon also appealed for medical supplies, doctors, and trauma doctors. He said most of the kids were shocked after the quake.
“Kung may gustong tumulong, ‘yung medical supplies lang and doctors, trauma doctors…”
“Maybe mga psychiatrist dahil ‘yung mga bata dito tulala. Kahit mga matatanda kailangan siguro matingnan ng mga psychiatrist,” he added.
