VISUAL ART – In this topic, we will now take a look at the different forms of visual art, its meaning, characteristics and examples.
Definition
Visual art is defined as something that is created and should be seen by people, hence the name “visual”. It is a type of art that can be seen by people in the history of time.
There are seven forms: Architecture, Ceramics, Painting, Conceptual Art, Drawing, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture.
The Forms
1. Architecture
It is the art and science of buildings and structures. It is derived from the Greek word arkhitekton ( ἀρχιτέκτων) which means “master builder, director of works,” which is also derived from the two Greek words arkhi (αρχι) which means “chief”, and tekton (τεκτων), which means “builder, carpenter”.
Architecture is also the art and discipline of creating a complex object or system.
Some of its famous examples are the Pantheon by the Greeks, the Pyramids by the Egyptians, and the Colosseum by the Ancient Romans.
2. Ceramics
An art form which involves the use of ceramic materials to make objects like pottery, tile, figurines, sculpture, and tableware.
Examples of ceramics is Diomedes and Polyxena in an amphora during the Etruscan era, the Venus of Dolní Věstonice in 25,000 BCE, Fountain by Marcel Duchamp, and more.
3. Conceptual art
Also known as conceptualism, it is a type of art where the concepts or idea involved take precedence over traditional, aesthetic, technical and material concerns. Installations or installation art also falls in this category
Examples of conceptual art is My Bed by Tracey Emin, One and Three Chairs by Joseph Kosuth, An Oak Tree by Michael Craig-Martin, and more.
4. Drawing
It is a means of making an image with the use of any of a wide variety of tools and techniques. It involves making marks on a surface by applying pressure from the tool or moving it across a surface.
Examples of drawing artists are Paul Cadden, Hector Gonzales, Pablo Picasso, and more
5. Painting
A form of creative expression. Drawing is simply part or another category of this art form as this also involves, gesture, composition, narration, or abstraction. It varies and depends on the painter.
Examples of which is the Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Poppy Field near Argenteuil by Claude Monet, and more.
6. Photography
Involves the use of camera and to capture photographs in accordance with the vision of the photographer.
Examples of famous photographers are Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, Gregory Crewdson, and more.
7. Sculpture
The last visual art form is sculpture, which deals with three dimensions. It involves the carving and modeling materials such as stone, metal, ceramics, wood, terracotta, and more.
Examples of which are David by Donatello, The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fiumi Fountain by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and more.
