Here Are Different Laboratory Instruments And Their Functions

LABORATORY INSTRUMENTS – To perform experiments, scientists and researchers use different types of instruments that serve different functions.

Either for safety reasons, to contain certain compounds, for mixing and other laboratory works, scientists need specialized instruments. Experimenting with sensitive and dangerous substances such as corrosive chemicals also require protective gears.

Here are some ideas for easy experiments you can perform for school projects or science fairs.

Most laboratories use the same basic apparatus for their scientific researches. Knowledge about these instruments is important to be familiar with the different tools you get to use once you start experimenting.

Here are different instruments and their uses:

BEAKERS

One of the most common items in most labs. Beakers are specialized containers that are commonly used in chemical labs for mixing, stirring and heating chemicals. Most beakers have spouts on the rim for pouring and marks on its sides for measuring guide.

ERLENMEYER FLASK

Also referred to by many as ‘conical flask’, this instrument was named Erlenmeyer flask based on its inventor’s name in 1861. This container has a narrow neck and its bottom has a conical shape. The shape was to allow scientists to mix and swirl the contents of the flask with minimal risk of spilling. It can also be clamped by the neck, heated or shaken using a mechanical device.

FLORENCE FLASKS/BOILING FLASKS

This flask is also a container but it has a round bottom and an extended neck. Normally used to contain liquids. It’s shape allows it to be swirled easily and get heated. It can be plugged with rubber stoppers.

However, take note that these flasks shouldn’t be heated if capped. Otherwise, pressure will build up inside the container and might explode eventually.

TEST TUBES

This laboratory container is an elongated glass tube with an opening on one side and a closed round side on the other. These are used to contain small amounts of samples. Their usual function is for assessment and comparisons. They can also be capped by a stopper.

Test tubes can also be stored in test tube racks and can be lifted using a test tube tong when it’s unsafe to touch.

GRADUATED CYLINDERS

These lab instruments are for specific measuring. Primarily used as a tool to measure volumes of liquids, the instrument has markings on its sides with very specific increments. The tabs can come in different sizes. Smaller sizes (in diameter) are for more specific measurements.

These are some of the most basic instruments used in most laboratories. This is based on an article from Owlcation.
