Apolinario Mabini y Maranan was a Filipino hero born in July 23, 1864 in Tanauan, Batangas. He was also known as “Dakilang Lumpo” or the Sublime Paralytic. He served as the legal and constitutional adviser of Katipunan and the very first Prime Minister of the Philippines.

1. He studies in local schools

He studied his high school under the tutelage of D. Valerio Malabanan, a clergyman who was also known as the “Grandfather of the Batangueño intellectuality”. Mabini then moved to Manila to study his fourth high school year in Colegio de San Juan de Letran. He then studied Bachelor of Arts in Unibersidad de Santo Tomas but did not finished. He then proceed to finish law school in the same university for six years.

2. Superior Memory

Mabini was reported to have an incredible ability of memory albeit humble. This aided him in his journey to finish a degree.

3. A diamond in the rough

Mabini is an achiever despite the extreme poverty that has been hindering him in his life since he was born from extremely poor parents. He is one of the examples on what would happen if poor people aspires to study and work hard.

4. He used to dance

Everyone knows Mabini as the Sublime Paralytic but no one knew that he used to learn how to dance before he got polio. He was shy to find a dance partner so he used a chair to learn how to dance.

5. His own school

With the experience of an auxiliary teacher or instructor, Mabini established his own school in 1893 but lasted for two years. During that time, D. Manuel Arellano, the inspector of schools, said that his school was ranked among the best of that period, which were those of Alindada, Villamor (Ignacio) and Mendiola.

6. He abhorred the execution of Bonifacio

Not only that, he also abhorred the idea of declaring Independence as Aguinaldo’s unofficial adviser. Mabini described Bonifacio’s execution as the triumph of personal ambition upon true patriotism.

7. Triumphant against jealous enemies

When he was appointed as Aguinaldo’s trusted adviser, many were envious of Mabini, with some calling him the “Dark Chamber of the President”. Some even said he got syphilis that caused his paralysis. However, these gossips were proven wrong and is a result of the Filipinos’ old tactic built from jealousy, envy or plain cussedness, as described by author F. Sionil Jose.

8. Way ahead of his time

His brilliance was too exemplary that it was way ahead of its time. For example, he sees the Congress should be an “advisory body of the President”. Most of his ideas were brilliant but was unsuccessful due to the ongoing war in that era.
