Local Seismologist Recorded 140 Aftershocks in Cotabato After Magnitude 5.6 Quake
A local volcanologist reported that the magnitude 5.6 earthquake that hits North Cotabato triggered at least 140 aftershocks.
On Tuesday evening (July 9, 2019), a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hits the town of Makilala, North Cotabato.
The powerful tremor is tectonic in origin and located at 06.84°N, 125.03°E – 015 km S 27° W of Makilala with a depth of 010 kilometers.
On Wednesday morning (July 10, 2019), Philvolcs field observer and officer in charge in Kidapawan City Engineer Hermes Daquipa reported that the agency recorded at least 140 aftershocks following the strong quake.
Daquipa disclosed that of those aftershocks, 12 were felt in Kidapawan after the quake in Makilala.
“These are shakes that were felt by humans,” Daquipa said.
He also explained that those aftershocks were recorded in the seismograph but not all cannot be felt.
Mayor Joseph A. Evangelista has also announced work suspension at the city hall to check the building for damages. Evangelista also canceled the classes in all levels in the city.
