Let us first know the definition of a volcano,

Definition

A volcano is a type of land-form that is similar to a mountain but with a distinctive feature. Volcanoes have a crater located at the very top of it. This allows substances like lava, hot gas, and volcanic ashes to come out of the crater, which is what we commonly call an eruption.

Now inside the volcanoes, there are substances that we call magma and lava, but what is the difference between the two?

A magma is made of molten rock and is well stored beneath the Earth’s crust. Magma is also the main component of igneous rocks when cooled. When magma rises and comes out of the crater, it becomes lava.

Now, volcanoes have four kinds: active, dormant, erupting, and extinct.

The Four Kinds

1. Active

Active volcanoes are those that erupt at least once during the past 10,000 years. They can either be dormant or erupting.

Examples:

  • Mt. Erebus, Antarctica
  • Mt. Cleveland, Alaska
  • Kilauea, Hawaii.

2. Erupting

A erupting volcano is a type of active volcano that is currently erupting.

Examples (as of current):

  • Sangeang Api, Indonesia
  • Sabancaya, Peru
  • Dukono, Halmahera

3. Dormant

It is a type of an active volcano that is not erupting, but supposed to erupt again.

Examples:

  • Mt. Mayon, Philippines
  • Mt. Fuji, Japan
  • Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

4. Extinct

This is the type of volcano that has not erupted over the past 10,000 years and was expected to never erupt again.

Examples:

  • Mt. Buninyoung, Australia
  • Huascarán, Peru
  • Kohala, Hawaii
