In the Philippines, our lolas and lolos have developed ways that are very effective in minimizing the use of electronics. So for kids, do not get mad when they scold you for watching too much TV – it’s to save energy.

Especially during the previous months, when major electricity producer Meralco announced increases on power supply rates.

Monthly bills often become a burden that people resort to reducing the number of electronic devices around the house, when actually, there are ways that you can do to reduce the cost without sacrificing the electronics and the convenience it provides.

Here are a few simple tips to start with:

KEEP THE FRIDGE FULL

Refrigerators alone takes about 15 to 20 percent of the electricity. It has been reiterated many times by our parents and grandparents that frequently opening the refrigerator increases the electricity bill.

The more heat enters the fridge, the more the fridge operates. Following this, the fridge would consume more energy.

By keeping the fridge full, the items fill the empty spaces leaving a small room to be filled with cold air, thus lesser power needed.

Also, look for an Energy Efficient Factor tag when buying a fridge and make sure you don’t fill it too much.

SWITCH TO CFL (compact fluorescent lamps)

Despite its cost, Compact Fluorescent Lamps are more durable and take up to 75% lesser energy than cheaper brands. Making it a more practical choice.

To put into perspective, a 16-watt CFL provides just as much light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb.

START USING INDUCTION STOVES

Also a little bit more expensive than gas stoves, induction cookers are a lot cheaper to use in the long run.

It does run on electricity but it helps prevent excessive transfer of heat. Therefore, air conditioners and refrigerators have to operate less to get rid of the heat.

These types of cookers transfer most of the heat directly to the pan or whatever cooking utensil, decreasing the amount of head spread across the room.
