Class Suspension Announcement from Mayors Must Be Followed, DILG Says

The Department of the Interior and Local Government said that the class suspension announcement from mayors must be followed by universities.

On Tuesday (July 2, 2019), the Interior and Local Government announced that schools and universities must follow the mayors’ class suspension announcement.

The announcement came after a university in Manila disobeyed the order of Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno.

The university refused to suspend the classes in all levels and instead cancelled the classes only in elementary and high school.

DILG Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III cited Executive Order 66, series of 2012 stating that class and work suspensions might be implemented by DRRMC local chief executives.

“Tama po si Mayor Isko Moreno. Once nagkaroon ng pag-ulan sa isang lugar, whether may signal o wala, automatic ‘yung local DRMM sa pamumuno po ng mayor ang magsasabi kung may pasok o wala,” Densing said.

Classes are automatically suspended in the following storm signal warnings:

Signal No. 1 – Pre-school level
Signal No. 2 – Pre-school, elementary and high school levels
Signal No. 3 – Pre-school, elementary, high school and college levels
