Saudi Diplomat Made Filipina Maid Wear Buzzer Around Neck, Fed Her Leftovers
SAUDI DIPLOMAT – A Saudi diplomat in the UK allegedly made a Filipina maid wear a buzzer around her neck and fed her leftovers.
We can’t deny that there are bossed who mistreat their employees. These kinds of people exist wherever we are so we have to be cautious if they are already abusing us.
The government in the Philippines have already received lots of reports from abused Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) all around the world.
Most of them were sent home immediately to the Philippines to be with their families and recover from the abuse.
However, there are also domestic helpers who just keep their patience with their bosses just to send enough money to their family.
Recently, a Filipina maid in the United Kingdom couldn’t stand the alleged abuse of her Saudi diplomat employer named Khalid Basfar so she reported it to the authorities.
Based on a report from Philstar, her employer allegedly let her wear a buzzer around her neck so she could be on call for 24 hours a day.
She’s forced to work from 7 am to 11:30 pm every day and she also claimed that the family of her boss fed her leftovers.
According to the report, the Pinay’s accepted the job in exchange for a working visa. The Saudi diplomat promised her a minimum wage and a day off.
The OFW said she was allegedly frequently verbally abused by his employer’s family. She can’t easily leave the house since her salary is withheld. She also claimed that she can only call her family twice a year.
For six months of work, the Filipina was only paid around P20,658.
Based on the report, the Saudi diplomat asked the case to be dropped since he is entitled to diplomatic immunity. But his petition was dismissed by employment judge Jill Brown.
“The claimant is a victim of trafficking, who was exploited by the respondent and his family…”
“I conclude a claim instituted against a foreign diplomat by his domestic servant in relation to work in his home in assumed conditions of human trafficking and modern slavery relates to ‘commercial activity exercised outside his official functions,’” Brown added.
