DOST-Phivolcs Informs Public To Be Prepared for Possible “Big One”

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology remind the public again to prepare for the potential large earthquake popularly known as the “Big One”.

Over the past few years, the so-called “Big one Earthquake” has been one of the major concerns of the residents living with in West Valley Fault or known as Marikina Valley Fault.

The “Big One” could kill 34,000 people and injure over 114,000 others due to collapsed buildings.

On Thursday (June 20, 2019), DOST-PHIVOLCS reminds the public regarding active faults that have not yet generated strong tremors have a bigger chance to generate a major earthquake including “The Big One”.

The agency conducts the second quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) promoting quake-preparedness and awareness.

DOST Undersecretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. explained the importance of earthquake drills as readiness on how to respond during the scenario.

“The NSED is a simulation exercise whereby we test our preparedness on how to respond in an actual situation,” Solidum said.
