American Promoter Bob Arum Warns Pacquiao Of Brain Damage Risk
BOB ARUM – The American boxing promoter – Bob Arum – raised warnings for Filipino veteran boxer Manny Pacquio against risk of brain damage.
The “people’s champ” is set to fight the undefeated American profession boxer Keith Thurman at the MGM Grand Arena on July 20. The two fighters faced each other previously at PBC during a press conference.
Meanwhile, Bob Arum, who has already cut connections with Pacquiao worried for the 41 year old boxer.
He said he smells danger, noting that Pacquiao could end up facing great risks of brain damage.
Pacquiao, despite his age, is a reigning champion on his weight division. He is currently at 147 pounds.
He will take on a much younger, undefeated professional boxer, Keith Thurman.
Arum expressed his concern for Pacquiao in a statement he made at www.boxingscene.com:
“I’m really rooting for Manny Pacquiao. But you’ve gotta realize, he’s 41 years of age.”
He also says he is concerned about the risk for Pacquiao as he “would be for any fighter” and that they should probably put boxing aside when they hit a certain age.
As doctors would tell, according to Arum, the top part of the human skull – the cranium, wears out and gets thinner as people get older.
He added: “So, a guy who’s younger gets hit and the cranium absorbs the blow, so it doesn’t affect the brain matter. When they get older, the cranium is thinner.”
Following this statement, he then raised the warning for Pacquiao against the possibility of a brain damage risk:
“And when you get hit, it affects the – and that would be the worst thing in the world, if Manny Pacquiao suffered brain damage at this point.”
This is based on an article from PhilStar.
As a professional fighter, Pacquiao is about to reach the 25th year of his boxing career.
He has fought 70 fights throughout his career and has a record of 61-7-2. He has brawled with violent boxers and has been knocked out three times.
Thurman is a much younger fighter, 10 years younger than Pacquiao. With a record of 29-0 with 22 knockouts, he says he will send Pacquiao to retirement.
Pacquiao, in response to the warning, says he heard this warning many times before and added: “I feel like I’m 20.”
That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
