DepEd Chief Says She’s Not Against Teachers’ Salary Increase
DEPED CHIEF – The Department of Education secretary, Leonor Briones, clarified she’s not against the teachers’ salary increase.
We can’t deny that we love to have additional benefits or salary increase from our employers.
Due to the nonstop increase in the goods and fare in the country, we would wish to have one.
Most public teachers in the Philippines have appealed and protested to the government to increase their salaries.
It’s sad to know that some teachers who are designated to difficult areas spend most of their salaries for their fare.
Based on a report from Philstar, DepEd secretary Leonor Briones clarified that she is not against the teacher’s salary increase, contrary to the claim of some organizations or groups.
“As education secretary and as an advocate, I am committed to the policy to promote and improve the social and economic status of public school teachers, their living and working conditions and their terms of employment.”
“I am in full support of the President’s pronouncement to raise the salaries of teachers,” she added.
According to the report, the DepEd chief trust that the teacher’s salary increase will happen but they have to check if it is also equitable for the government.
“The next salary increase of public school teachers will come. As secretary of education and member of the Cabinet, it is my duty to help make sure that such salary increase is equitable, within the government’s means and sustainable,” said Briones.
Leonor Briones assured the educators that DepEd has been collaborating with the government’s economic team in finding a way to increase the salary of more than 830,000 teachers.
If the P5,000 increase will happen, the board will need an additional P75 billion every year.
Based on the report, the DepEd chief expressed that they also have to take note of the borrowing or budget reallocation and policies in taxes.
“I emphasized that we cannot think of the teachers alone. There is an equity issue in relation to other government personnel that we need to address,” she said.
