The Stop Kaliwa Dam Network’s Campaign To Stop The Controversial Project

GROUP – Stop Kaliwa Dam Network recently launched a campaign to get 10 million signatures as a petition to stop the Kaliwa Dam Project.

There were speculations recently that the past water shortages in Manila was allegedly created artificially to justify the need for the construction of the China-funded Kaliwa Dam.

A copy of the formal petition for the campaign was forwarded to the president to revoke the decision to construct the Kaliwa Dam Project.

It was written in the petition that the Kaliwa Dam project is considerably “illegal, unconstitutional, bad for the enviromnetal and it also violates Philippine ‘s national interests.”

The petition also mentioned about several indigenous and environmental groups opposing the pursuance of the Kaliwa Dam project.

A list of disadvantages that may come with the construction of the dam was also included:

1. The Kaliwa Dam Project is violating legal processes and is sending indigenous people away from their homes.
2. The Kaliwa Dam Project’s construction could cause irreversible environmental damages to the Sierra Madre.
3. The Kaliwa Dam Project will initiate yet another loan from China

The network also considered Metro Manila’s difficulty in keeping the water supply adequate, they said the matter shouldn’t be dealt with in a way that it compromises the people’s rights, the environment. Also the laws in Philippines and the country’s sovereignty.

They also disclosed insights from several experts for sustainable alternative solutions to the issue. The alternative mentions include: creating a water shed, forest restoration and conservation, enactment of the Forest Resources Bill, repairing and developing currently existing dams and imposition of Forest Resources Bill.
