Young Coconuts From The Philippines Will Be Exported To US Markets Soon

PHILIPPINES – Young coconuts, locally known as “buko” from the Philippines will be exported to enter United States’ markets.

Coconut was dubbed the “Tree of Life” in the Philippines. The plant grows in most areas across the country.

In another news, coconut plant cultivators and farmers in the country were also given the permission to utilize a trust fund provided by the government.

Meanwhile, the officials in the PH government announced recently that parts of the coconut produce will be now be exported to the United States through available ports.

An attaché of the Philippine Agriculture – Dr. Josyline Javelosa in the US reported the affirmation of the US government regarding the permission to export the coconut produce.

A bilateral meeting was held on May 22-23 between US and Philippines’ Plant Health Officers United States Department Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health and Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) headquarters located at Riverdale, Maryland US.

During the forum – in which Javelosa participated in – the Head of the U.S. delegation, also deputy director of Phytosanitary Issues Management (PIM) Dr. Jill Wallace reported the confirmation that the young coconuts can be inspected considering they’re green and not overaged, also must have at least 75% of it’s shell removed.

After the inspection affirms, the produce can be released to the US markets permitted by 7 CFR 319.56.

Philippine Ambassador to The US Jose Manuel G. Romualdez also made his congratulatory remarks expressing his appreciation towards the participants that propelled the positive outcomes.

He said:

“I congratulate the participants for covering a lot of ground in their bilateral meeting. These positive developments bode well for the expansion of Philippines-US agriculture cooperation and creation of opportunities for Filipino and American farmers and agri-businesses.”
