“I was a teenage mom. My baby’s father forced me to sleep outside with my baby…”

“That is the night I decided to go back to school,” she added.

Erica Alfaro’s parents are farm workers since she was just 13 years old. Her mom sometimes brought her to the fields and advised her to get an education.

“My mom took me to work with her in the tomato fields… And I remember she told me, ‘this is our life. The only people who have a good life are the people who have a good education,’” she said.

Based on the report, the graduate said her son who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy inspired her to finish her studies.

“I had so many excuses to give up… but giving up was never an option.”

My son represents a new generation… he will have a better future. He will have more opportunities, and I will be there to tell him that it is possible. That he belongs. All those things I never heard myself,” she added.
