It can be classified into three different types – the multiple vortex tornado, landspout, and waterspout.

The multiple vortex tornado contains several vortices (called subvortices or suction vortices) rotating around, inside of, and as part of the main vortex.

Landsprout is a colloquial expression describing tornadoes occurring with a parent cloud in its growth stage and with its vorticity originating in the boundary layer.

Watersprout is an intense columnar vortex (usually appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud) that occurs over a body of water.
